• The crown’s appearance in my work was a curious and playful event. Initiated with washes and gestures of sepia ink, the mundane icon became loaded and inviting. This event combined with my relentless passion for culling images from the internet, became an exploration of the vast associations of crowns and their symbolism. Viewing countless gorgeous relics, marketing logos and plastic reproductions in their jpeg glory, their scattered histories inspired this series. Through these investigations I consider the relevance of iconic objects in a new light. It is during the process of painting where I indulge in the musings of time, power and loss that seem so deeply associated. The result is a new crown-- one bred by abstraction and produced through an autobiographical lens--to be added to the lineage of crowns regaled or forgotten.
