- Economists use the term post-scarcity to describe a society that exchanges goods and services chiefly through the gift economy. Less altruistic than it sounds, post-scarcity relies on networks of reciprocity simply because demand for manufactured goods ceases in such an excessively bloated market.
- Discussion across disciplines is currently being framed by a bellowing cacophony of debates over down turns, downsizing, depressions and zero-growth. These anxieties are so omni-present, in such close proximity and full of such sound and fury, that they deafen the slow and steady hum of alternatives that perpetually surge alongside the vicious cycles of boom and bust. These alternatives find a voice and are amplified in concert between Fernand, Herrera and Mack’s work in this summer group show.
- By taking the long view, past recession-proof thinking and bail-out plans, this modest but succinct look at all three artists’ work reveals a varied aesthetic bound together by a shared sensitivity to their media’s physical properties and use value. This enables Fernand, Herrera and Mack to transform their up-cycled and resourced materials magpie style, refining and reconfiguring them.
- As Fernand’s performance expands and contracts, Herrera’s sound installation travels it’s troughs through time and space, and Mack’s maximum cycle animation loops, each work tirelessly regenerates itself. This generous proliferation ensures a thriving artistic practice during feast or famine, and merits the moniker post-scarcity put another way; abundance.
