Art in America: Reviews
- SOME ABSTRACTION OCCURS:
- PAMELA JORDEN, JASMINE JUSTICE, WES SHERMAN, and WENDY WHITE
- A Group Show of Works Curated by Tiffany Calvert
- January 11 - February 9, 2008
- Opening Reception: Friday January 11, 2008 (7-10PM)
- 65GRAND is pleased to present Some Abstraction Occurs, conceived as an exhibition of small scale, intimate works all less than 34 inches in length or width. This constraint is also a situation in which to address the challenge of making a small painting of consequence.
- The exhibition presents two paintings by each artist, proposing similarities and juxtapositions between the works. Each artist approaches the medium of abstraction in his or her own way. While certain aspects diverge, others converge. Each artist has “a very different tactic with which they attack the paintings,” says curator Tiffany Calvert. “But the formal aspects and the solutions they come up with have important similarities.” All share a similar use of color in a mixture of vibrant hues and dark tones, for example. In a conversation with Wendy White in January of 2007, Jasmine Justice stated, "I like contrasting the qualities or circumstances inside paintings against one another." This approach is at the heart of this exhibition, where the internal conversation of each artist's work extends to include the works of others. The art is a work of hermetic abstraction, referring only to painting itself, rather than extraneous external concerns such as politics or emotional expressionism. This conscious exclusion of the external is a positive and determined act of assertion, not of casual withdrawal.
- Pamela Jorden lives and works in Los Angeles. She has had solo exhibitions at Klaus von Nichtssagend Gallery in 2004 and 2006 and at Rutgers University, Mason Gross Art Gallery in 2005. A solo exhibition at The Balmoral in Los Angeles is planned for 2008.
- Jasmine Justice lives and works in Brooklyn. She was featured in a solo exhibition this past summer at the Cue Art Foundation curated by David Reed and in a group exhibition at ZieherSmith in 2006.
- Wes Sherman lives and works in New York City. Solo exhibitions include Domo Gallery in Summit, NJ; The Arts Company in Nashville, TN in 2007; and Baumgartner Gallery in New York in 2006.
- Wendy White lives and works in New York. In 2006 she had solo exhibitions at Sixtyseven in New York and Solomon Projects in Atlanta. In 2008 a solo exhibition is planned for Leo Koenig, Inc. in New York.
- Tiffany Calvert is an artist and lives in Queens. She is represented by Lisa Boyle Gallery in Chicago and will be opening an exhibition of new paintings at Lisa Boyle Gallery on Saturday January 12, 2008. Some Abstraction Occurs is Calvert’s first curatorial effort.
